Corporate Navigation (CorpNav) IE Toolbar for SharePoint

The Corporate Navigation (CorpNav) IE Toolbar for SharePoint is an Internet Explorer add-in toolbar that displays a multi-level navigation menu, as defined in a list on your SharePoint server.  This is an indispensable tool for companies using SharePoint as a corporate intranet/extranet and want to provide their employees or customers with a centrally-managed navigation scheme.  It provides an easy-to-use, always-on solution to employees/customers having to navigate to the home page or site directory in order to find their way around the company's websites (internal or external) because the navigation menus are built right into Internet Explorer as an add-on toolbar.  And, using SharePoint's built-in security features at the folder or item level, the navigation menu can be customized by user or group.

The Need for Better SharePoint Navigation

SharePoint delivers built-in breadcrumbs and navigation, but these are limited in scope to a single site collection.  By Microsoft's recommended best practices, you will have at least two site collections - one for content and one for shared services; and we've seen many SharePoint customers create multiple site collections for content.  Additionally, the SharePoint navigation disappears when you navigate outside the SharePoint realm to vendor, customer or any other websites.

With the CorpNav IE Toolbar for SharePoint, you can quickly and easily define a navigation menu that spans any number of internal or external sites.  The menu never changes regardless of what site you are on.  This provides consistency and reliability that your users will appreciate. Additionally, the CorpNav toolbar exposes some handy SharePoint features (including My Site, My Links, and SharePoint Search Scopes) to reduce the need for users to make a pit-stop at the SharePoint home page on their way to other places.

Features
  • Menu content and configuration settings are stored in a SharePoint list for easy, familiar management of content.
  • Displays menu content in a multi-level dropdown context menu.  When you hover your mouse over a menu entry, a tooltip displays an administrator-defined description about the link. Clicking on a menu item launches the configured URL in the active browser/tab.
  • Toolbar displays custom logo (a company logo or a project/product logo) of your choice to help brand your use of the toolbar.
  • Exposes MySites and MyLinks automatically, if your SharePoint installation uses those features, under the logo's dropdown menu.
  • Provides flexible means to expose your company's search facilities, with a search box and a dropdown list for setting the focus of your search to any of the configured search scopes.    Search scopes can be any URL which takes the search text as a querystring variable.
  • Menu content can be tailored to specific user communities by using SharePoint's folder- and record-level permissions.
  • The URL behind specific menu items can be set to allow end users to customize the URL to their own needs, storing personalization settings in a SharePoint list for centralized access.
  • Menu items can be set to sort automatically alphabetically (ascending or descending), or menu items can be configured for a manual sort order.
  • Designed to be performance-friendly, working from a local cached copy of the server content for fast startup and sparingly using server and network resources by only updating the local cache with server content on an admin-defined timeframe.
  • Content/Configuration updates will not slow down your browser because the toolbar communicates with the server in a background task.
  • Supports command-line setup parameters so IT departments can easily deploy and configure without user intervention.
  • Supports auto-upgrade of the client toolbar software, managed by the settings defined in the SharePoint configuration list.
